When you first log into your hosting account using FTP or Telnet you will see the following directories and files.

.files Files that start with a "." are required for proper functionality of your account and should not be modified or deleted.

logs Your access_log and error_log files reside in this directory in standard NCSA format. These files are rotated on a monthly basis using access_log.prv and error_log.prv. Old logs are removed every month. If you choose to download these files using FTP, make sure to use ASCII mode.
htdocs All html and graphics assessable through the web should be placed in this directory. Your first file should be index.html Make sure to use all lower case. Please note that FrontPage users will find files and directories that start with "." and "_" plus an images directory which are all required by FrontPage and should not be removed.
priv This is directory is at the same level as your docs directory and is accessed at http://www.your_site.com/priv/ Files ftp'd to this directory will require a user name and password to gain web access. Use your Web Site Manager to add, modify and delete users.
