What is a Domain Name (Web Address)?
Your
domain name (or web address) can be thought of as the foundation of
your Internet identity. Your customers will use this web address
or easy-to-remember handle to find your web site and learn more about
your products and services.
The web address consists of a particular host server
(usually www), your unique organization or entity name, and a
top-level domain name (the most common top-level domains being com -
commercial, net - network, and org - organization). Each piece
is then concatenated together and connected by a period ".".
Thus giving you a complete domain name, for example www.peckweb.net.
This complete Universal Resource Locator (URL) is used for identifying
and locating computers on the Internet.
In our example, the web address www.peckweb.net
represents the company Peckman Web Technologies. When you type
www.peckweb.net on the address line of a web browser or send an E-mail
to someone at peckweb.net, what's happening behind the scenes is that
the Domain Name System (DNS) translates the web address peckweb.net
into the Internet Protocol (IP) address which is then used by
computers on the Internet to connect you to the Peckman Web
Technologies web site.
With all this being said, there is a quick and easy
way to find out if your desired web domain name is available, simply
type the name in the box provided below, select .com, .net, .org, .us,
.biz, or .info
and click on the GO! button to the right. Remember that
you may only use letters, numbers, and the dash "-" symbol when
constructing your web address. It is not necessary to enter a
www or a .com, .net, or .org in the box below. Good Luck and if
you have any further questions regarding web addresses, then please
feel free to
